Ipswich Deaf Children's Society
WHO ARE THEY AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
Ipswich Deaf Children’s Society has been supporting Deaf children and their families for over 30 years. They look after about 120 Deaf children across not just Ipswich but also all over Suffolk.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CHILDREN’S CHARITIES?
They don’t just support the Deaf child, but they also support their families too. That’s the parents, the siblings and even the grandparents too.
Because they genuinely believe that “Communication starts at home”. The Deaf child need to be able to communicate with his/her whole family.
Their mission statement is ‘Hearing-Loss support for children, young people, and their families’
They believe in the wording ‘Hearing Loss’ as it is a gentle and kinder word to describe Deafness rather than ‘Hearing Impaired’
The charity is run by a team of volunteers – mostly parents of Deaf children – all unpaid and all give up their free times to help. They provide events/activities for Deaf children throughout the year, and usually hold 1 or 2 events per month which means they are a very active Charity.
As well as entertainment events such as Jumpin, Soft play, Go Karting, kayaking, they also provide educational events. They recently held an event at the Dry Slope Ski Centre in Ipswich where the Deaf children had 2 hourly lessons and learned how to ski for the first time in their lives. The charity provided a BSL Interpreter who could relay what the Skiing Instructors was saying so that the Deaf children could understand clearly on what was being said. They thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and went back to book more lessons! What a success!
The charity provides British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness training so if you have any employees or family/friends that want to learn BSL or how to communicate with Deaf people, they are here to help you.
Richard Platt, Chairman of IDCS, said 'We want to say a huge thank you to all of you for choosing our local Charity to be your Charity of the Year! We are truly excited! Thank you so much!'
